Description
This handmade seed bead medicine bag necklace was made in Guatemala by a Mayan artisan there. I collected it during my travels there in Antigua. The size of this medicine bag along with the quetzal birds on the front is what caught my eye. The quetzal is Guatemala's country bird. It is an animal that is honored all across Guatemala.
"Quetzals are regarded as a legendary species on the various tribes of the Native Indians in Central America. Quetzalcoatl, a representation of the good spirit for the Mayans and also the Aztecs is depicted with a serpent head and decorated with the feathers of a Resplendent Quetzal. The bird is sacred and killing a quetzal is punishable by death, thus after the tribe’s have plucked its feather, both tribes are releasing this bird into the wild. The Aztec predicted that the Quetzalcoatl will return as a king of God in 1519, incidentally when Cortez reached the harbor of Vera Cruz a head dress adorned with a quetzal feather is given to him." -auntyflo
